The Hull Memory Clinic
Dementia is a progressive disorder that affects how the brain works, particularly the ability to remember, think and reason. There are many types of dementia, the most common being Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular dementia and Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Dementia affects some 750,000 people in the UK, although often only a proportion of these receive an early diagnosis.
The Hull Memory Clinic at Humber NHS Foundation Trust, is an internationally renowned specialist clinical academic centre located in Coltman Street, Hull. Help is available for older people and their families to find solutions – or even to prevent – some of the difficulties associated with a reduced memory, in order that they can manage the condition.
With money and support from the King’s Fund, the NHS and some very hard-working fund-raisers, the Hull Memory Clinic has been transformed from a dark, unwelcoming building into a bright, positive and healing space.
Although there is more to be done, the small group of devoted and passionate staff at the resource offer a fundamental service to older people with memory concerns, their families and also to staff who support them across Hull. Expert advice is available at the Clinic to enhance positive approaches to ‘living well with dementia’.
